External Affairs Coordinator, Cabot Oil & Gas

The Shale Gas News, heard every Saturday at 10 AM on 94.3 FM, 1510 AM and Sundays on YesFM, talked about U.S. oil, PA production, Susquehanna County and much more last week.

The Shale Gas News has grown again; welcome Gem 104 as our FOURTH station! Gem 104 helps to solidify the Shale Gas News coverage in an important Marcellus region, PA’s northern tier. The Shale Gas News is now broadcasting in Bradford, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Luzerne, Lycoming, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga and Wayne Counties, as well as in greater central PA. The Shale Gas News is aired on Saturday or Sunday depending on the station.

Every Saturday Rusty Fender and I host a morning radio show to discuss all things natural gas. This week, as a guest, we had Curtis Wilkerson, president of Orion Strategies.

The Shale Gas News, typically, is broadcast live. On the November 3rd show (click above), we covered the following new territory (see news excerpts below):

  • Four Pennsylvania Counties Can Supply All the Gas Germany Needs! Four counties in Pennsylvania—Bradford, Greene, Susquehanna and Washington—can supply all the natural gas needed by Germany. It can give Russia the Heisman.  My post the other day about the fact “Susquehanna County Produces More Than 4% of U.S.” has been quite well read.  The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) monthly data for August on natural gas production in the Commonwealth reveals the sheer enormity of the shale revolution and how much of it is taking place in Pennsylvania.  Regular reader and guest blogger Chris Acker offers further insights.
  • U.S. Natural Gas Goes Global. As much as fossil fuel alternatives are increasing, natural gas is increasing more. Gas dominates the American energy scene and will continue to grow faster than all other energy sources in the United States.  At prices less than $3/MMBtu, natural gas is undercutting nuclear and coal. Renewables can only compete with huge subsidies and state mandates. Besides, renewables need gas to load-follow them so gas loves wind and solar.
  • U.S. Oil To Significantly Outperform This Year. On the morning of publication of the EIA-914 and EIA PSM reports today (October 31), providing US monthly oil production data for August 2018, Rystad Energy analysis indicates that the market should expect significant outperformance of US oil production compared to the EIA’s predictions.  The EIA’s current Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) suggests total US oil production growth of 90,000 bpd from July to August 2018 with nationwide oil production averaging 11.05 million bpd in August 2018.
  • State appeals court upholds Allegheny Township’s approval of fracking wells. The Commonwealth Court ruled 5-2 to deny an appeal by Allegheny Township property owners who tried to overturn multiple rulings that allow unconventional gas drilling in all of the township’s zoning districts. It’s a David and Goliath story that might not yet be over, according to the plaintiffs’ attorney, Christopher Papa, as he and his clients consider an appeal to the state Supreme Court.
  • PA Antis Suffer Crushing Defeat in SWPA Zoning Case re ERA. An important court case was decided on Friday in Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court that potentially impacts all shale drilling in the state. You will recall that seven selfish towns sued the state over the 2012 Act 13 law and it’s provision that would substitute a statewide, uniform and fair set of zoning ordinances for drilling in place of a patchwork, crazy quilt system of local ordinances for oil and gas drilling. Seven selfish towns (including Robinson Township) wanted their own ordinances and sued, ultimately winning at the Supreme Court.
  • Retired Range VP of Marcellus Heads to Huntley & Huntley as COO. The man largely responsible for the huge success of Range Resources in drilling in the Marcellus Shale, Range’s former senior vice president in charge of the Marcellus, John Applegath, is heading to Huntley & Huntley to helm the drilling program there. Applegath recently retired from Range, but he’s not ready for the pasture just yet! He’s jazzed to be working with the much smaller H&H and the team they’ve assembled, to drill in the Pittsburgh area. H&H has roughly 100,000 leased acres in southwest PA.
  •  Chesapeake Now Gone from Ohio Utica; Spends $4B in Eagle Ford. Chesapeake Energy has just blown the minds (and confidence) of investors by plunking down $4 billion in cash and stock to buy WildHorse Resource Development Corp, a driller with big-time assets in the oily Eagle Ford Shale play in Texas. Investors didn’t like the news, punishing the stock by sending it 12% lower. Chesapeake Energy today is definitely not the same company it was even five years ago. Chessy was co-founded by the flamboyant Aubrey McClendon (God rest his soul).
