Employees of UGI Energy Services spent their Veterans Day providing and serving a catered lunch to residents, many of whom are veterans, of Opportunity House.
Opportunity House originally opened in 1984 as a place where homeless men could get a hot meal and a warm place to sleep. Over the years Opportunity House has become a multi-service facility improving the quality of life for those in need in Berks, Schuylkill and Lancaster Counties.
One of the many services now offered by Opportunity House is supportive services for veterans and their families. They offer financial and housing assistance along with other services to qualified veterans and their families facing homelessness.
UGI Energy Services took the opportunity to be able to give back to those who have served our great country by providing a meal and their employees as volunteers to serve the residents of Opportunity House a catered lunch.

November 12, 2018, Reading, PA — UGI Energy Services, LLC (UGIES), a subsidiary of UGI Corporation, held a volunteer activity today at the Opportunity House in Reading, to support homeless veterans in the area. Volunteers served a catered lunch to about 50 Opportunity House residents, many of whom are veterans.
“We are happy to give back to people in need, especially those who have served our country,” said Joe Hartz, President of UGI Energy Services. “Providing this meal is a small token of thanks for their efforts in helping protect our many freedoms.”
The UGI family of companies has a history of supporting our armed forces including the hiring of many skilled veterans—including Jeff England, Project and Construction Manager for UGI Energy Services.
“Volunteering in the community is important, and I am proud to participate in an event that is focused on improving the lives of veterans,” said England. “The Supportive Services for Veteran Families grant program at Opportunity House is a critical benefit for Berks County.”
The Opportunity House has assisted over 400 veteran families over the past two years in Berks, Schuylkill and Lancaster Counties. The veteran program helps qualifying individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in order to obtain and/or maintain permanent housing by providing social services and financial aid.
