Spring’s coming; working gas draw falls

In a sign that spring really is on the way, the volume of working natural gas pulled from storage during the week ended March 30, was the lowest in nearly five months, data from the Energy Information Administration reveals.

During the week ended March 30, just 29 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of working natural gas was withdrawn. That total was the lowest draw since the week ended Nov. 10, 2017, when just 18 Bcf was pulled from storage.

During the week ended Dec. 1, 2017, 2 Bcf actually were added to the working-gas total, according to EIA data.

Total working gas stored at March 30, fell to 1.35 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), from 1.38 Tcf one week earlier, Kallanish Energy finds.

The latest total was down 697 Bcf, or 34.0%, from the year-ago total of 2.05 Tcf, and was doiwn 347 Bcf, or 20.4%, from the five-year average of 1.70 Tcf.

Just three of the five regions EIA divides the Lower 48 U.S. states into to track stored working gas reported a week-to-week drop. The Pacific region reported no change, maintaining 166 Bcf in storage, while the South Central region recorded a 3 Bcf increase in stored working gas, to 606 Bcf, from 603 Bcf.

The biggest draw was pulled from the Midwest region, 18 Bcf, or 6.3% of total stored, to 266 Bcf, from 284 Bcf during the week ended March 23.
