Natural Gas NOW readers pass along a lot of stuff every week about natural gas, fractivist antics, emissions, renewables, and other news relating to energy. As usual, emphasis is added.

Cuomo Wants to “Lead a Citizen Fleet” to Stop Offshore Drilling

Andrew Cuomo just made a grab for “The Nation’s Most Craven Governor” award with this:

Gov. Cuomo vowed on Friday to “lead a citizen fleet” to stop oil and gas drilling off New York’s coast as he proposed a new state law to ban the practice.

“I’m going to commission the citizen fleet from throughout the state to go out and interfere with their federal effort just as Winston Churchill did in Dunkirk,” Cuomo said at a press conference in Battery Park overlooking New York harbor. “If you think I’m kidding, I’m not, and I’m going to lead that citizen fleet.”

If you needed proof Cuomo is threatened by Cynthia Nixon running to his left and supposes he can, in fact, fool all the people all the time, this is it. Combine this childish display with his previous ban on fracking and denial of pipeline certifications and you have the most politically craven state leadership in the nation.

Youngstown Radicals Promise Future Torment As They Lose Again

The extremist CELDF’s shills in Youngstown lost a seventh time with their radical rights of nature proposal disguised as fracking ban:

And on the seventh try, the anti-fracking initiative in Youngstown failed again.

But supporters won’t rest.

“It’s not like we’re going to stop,” said Susie Beiersdorfer, a member of the Committee for the Youngstown Water Protection Bill of Rights, which backed the proposal. “Our motto is we don’t lose until we quit.”

The initiative lost 56 percent to 44 percent, according to final but unofficial results.

The proposal was to ban fracking and anything related to the extraction of fossil fuels in the city.

City voters had rejected similar ballot measures six times: twice in both 2013 and 2014, and once each in 2015 and 2016.

Members of the Mahoning Valley Coalition for Job Growth, which again opposed the anti-fracking proposal, said they’re not surprised backers of the initiative won’t give up.

The media repeatedly falls for the CELDF’s  “fracking ban” schtick when, in fact, it’s but an excuse for a much more extreme agenda, but it’s still nice to see the margin against the initiative again increasing.

New York State Thruway Windmills Not Working

Everything you need to know about New York’s energy strategy is summed up in this WGRZ story:

The New York State Thruway Authority, as part of the push by Gov. Andrew Cuomo for agencies to move toward so called “green energy” sources, installed several wind turbines a few years ago, projecting it would save $300,000 a year in utility costs.

Even if that was true, it would take 16 years for the nearly $5 million investment to pay for itself.

That’s if they worked.

But now – for the most part – they don’t.

The five wind turbines were erected to power toll plazas and other Thruway facilities near exits between Eden-Angola and the Pennsylvania state line.

However, much like the mythical guns of Navarone, the windmills have fallen silent.

In an email, Thruway Authority spokesperson Jennifer Givner confirmed, “The four turbines in Dunkirk, Eden/Angola, Silver Creek, and at the Ripley Toll Barrier, are currently offline waiting for replacement parts and/or maintenance.”

She also confirmed they’ve been off line for a while, stating: “The turbines were taken offline between October 2017 and early January 2018.”

There it is—in a nutshell—the absurd, doomed to fail, New York State energy strategy.
